Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division has achieved a significant milestone with the successful launch of the Bougainville (LHA 8), the Navy’s third America-class amphibious assault ship, into the Pascagoula River. This event underscores Ingalls Shipbuilding’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge vessels for national defense.

The Bougainville is the first in the America class to feature a well deck, enhancing its versatility by combining aviation capabilities with surface assault capabilities. These ships are designed to excel in various environments, operating as part of an expeditionary strike group, an amphibious task force, or an amphibious ready group. Equipped with advanced medical facilities and capable of accommodating modern aircraft like the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter and MV-22 Osprey, the Bougainville represents a pinnacle of modern naval engineering. Ingalls Shipbuilding’s Amphibious Ship Program Manager, Gene Miller, expressed pride in the team’s accomplishment, emphasizing dedication and collaboration. Ingalls Shipbuilding has a longstanding legacy of delivering critical vessels to the U.S. Navy, with 15 large-deck amphibious ships already delivered. The company remains committed to advancing U.S. national security, providing powerful ships and cutting-edge solutions across various domains.

As attention shifts to the next ship in the pipeline, the Fallujah (LHA 9), Ingalls continues its contribution to strengthening the nation’s defense capabilities. The launch of the Bougainville LHA 8 reflects the unwavering commitment of HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division to excellence and innovation in naval service. With a workforce of 43,000 and a legacy spanning over 135 years, HII continues to shape the future of naval warfare.
