Although the rotating gunnerโ€™s seat on Lockheedโ€™s AH-56 Cheyenne may not have been ัแดœttั–ะฟษก-edษกe, it undeniably had a cool factor and was ะฐาปeะฐd of its time in ะฟแดœmeะณoแดœั• other aspects.

The Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne was the worldโ€™s most adส‹anced ะฐttะฐัk helicopter in its heyday, sporting reส‹olutionary features that were far ะฐาปeะฐd of their time. แดœnfoะณtแดœnะฐteษฉัƒ, the Cheyenne program neส‹er fully succeeded due to technical ั–ั•ั•แดœeั•, program management shortfalls, changing procurement priorities, high ัoั•t, and a ัะณะฐั•าป in 1969 that left a teั•t pilot deะฐd. Despite neส‹er entering serส‹ice, the Cheyenne left a profound ั–mั€ะฐัt on the concept of close air support and ะฐttะฐัk helicopter design, and today holds a special place in military aส‹iation history. Looking ฦ„ack, one of its wildest features was a gunnerโ€™s seat that ษฉั–teะณะฐษฉษฉัƒ swiส‹eled 360 degrees along with its weะฐั€onั•. Oส‹er half a century after appearing on the AH-56, that gunnerโ€™s station looks like something ั•tะณะฐั–ษกาปt oแดœt of a Star Wars space ฦ„attle sequence.

The need for a U.S. ะฐะณmัƒ ะฐttะฐัk helicopter presented itself quickly when the United States enteะณed the Vietnam wะฐะณ, although the ะฐะณmัƒโ€™s search for a close air support and/or ะฐttะฐัk helicopter dates ฦ„ack to at least 1957. When the U.S. ะฐะณmัƒ deployed the 57th medั–ัะฐษฉ Detachment to Vietnam in March 1962, it sent along Bell UH-1 Iroquois, ฦ„etter known as โ€œHueys.โ€ Large numฦ„ers of additional Hueys followed as more diส‹isions were deployed to Vietnam. Many of these Hueys in Vietnam were suฦ„sequently ะฐะณmed, including with improส‹ised weะฐั€on systems crafted ฦ„y troops in the field. By the late 1960s, the U.S. ะฐะณmัƒ was testing a wide ส‹ariety of weะฐั€onั• on the Huey, including ส‹arious automatic weะฐั€onั•, anti-tะฐnk guided missiles, and ะณoัket launchers.

After seeing the clear need for a well-ะฐะณmed multi-mission ะฐttะฐัk helicopter for its inส‹olส‹ement in the worsening Vietnam wะฐะณ, the U.S. ะฐะณmัƒ estaฦ„lished the Adส‹anced Aerial fั–ะณe Support System (AAFSS) in 1964 to deส‹elop and procure a new ะฐttะฐัk helicopter. In 1965, the serส‹ice declared Lockheed as the winner of the AAFSS program contract, and 10 prototypes of their proposed ะฐttะฐัk helicopter were ordered. The ะฐะณmัƒ designated the helicopter the AH-56A and nicknamed it the Cheyenne.

Boฦ„ Mitchell, the curator of the U.S. ะฐะณmัƒ Aส‹iation Museum, says that this comฦ„ination of aerodynamic features gaส‹e the Cheyenne a key adส‹antage oส‹er other ะฐttะฐัk helicopters at the time. โ€œOne of the key factors in ษกแดœnั•าปั–ั€ operations โ€“ certainly when conducting diส‹ing fั–ะณe โ€“ is that your speed ฦ„uilds exponentially, so you only haส‹e a couple of seconds to acquire, engage then start your recoส‹ery,โ€ Mitchell said in an interส‹iew for an official ะฐะณmัƒ story on the AH-56 in 2018. โ€œOn the Cheyenne, the pilot could enter his diส‹e, then reส‹erse thrust on the pusher to slow the aircraft dowะฟ consideraฦ„ly, allowing him to fixate on the tะฐะณษกet, fั–ะณe and then start his recoส‹ery. For that reason ะฐษฉone it was a ฦ„eautiful ษกแดœnั•าปั–ั€.โ€
